The world needs energy. Demand is growing and will only continue to grow. While more conventional energy sources still have a part to play, the global consensus is that energy needs to be more sustainable and affordable.
Enter Ammonia
For years, ammonia has been emerging as a vital element of the global energy transition thanks to its properties as a low-carbon energy carrier and hydrogen vector. Moreover, ammonia is critical to the world’s food supply. According to estimates from the International Energy Agency, global ammonia production will need to increase by nearly 40% by 2050 to meet rising agricultural demand and to support the transition to more decarbonized energy system.
Fortunately, KBR is helping both commercial and government customers worldwide achieve more sustainable, energy-efficiency and lower-carbon ammonia production.
A Global Leader
KBR has been a leader in ammonia for more than 75 years, making production more efficient, reliable and sustainable. In that time, KBR has helped deliver more than 260 plants, executed more than 200 facility revamps, and produced some of the world’s largest, most complex, and fastest-to-market ammonia projects. To date, KBR’s expertise and industry-leading technologies account for more than half of the world’s licensed ammonia production capability.
With that legacy, KBR is well-positioned and ready to help producers execute their visions and to meet rising global demand for fertilizer and cleaner energy solutions.
Next-generation Technologies
From offshore/floating platforms to world-scale energy facilities, from space missions to world-first technologies, KBR has a long history of breaking boundaries.
This is certainly true of our experience in the ammonia space.
KBR K-GreeN® technology allows operators to produce green ammonia, which can in turn be used to produce green fertilizers. KBR also offers low-carbon blue ammonia processes that help generate fertilizers with lower carbon intensity compared to traditional ammonia technologies.
With KBR K-Boost® revamp technology, we enhance performance of existing plants, including fossil fuel facilities, to increase capacity and energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions.
But the proof of our excellence is in the results.
Recently, KBR’s Purifier® technology was selected by Pampa Energia for deployment at what will be the largest single-train ammonia plant in Latin America, which will help enhance regional fertilizer production and bolster food security. Purifier technology is used in nearly 40 plants worldwide.
Another recent and significant milestone was a record-setting ammonia facility startup. Using KBR technology, Indorama began production at its Train 3 ammonia plant just 10 days after feed-in and achieved 100% capacity within days. This successful commissioning highlights the power of KBR’s technology and ammonia expertise, our project execution excellence, and our commitment to collaborative partnerships with our customers.
Ammonia and AI
In January 2026, KBR announced the launch of KBR INSITE, a breakthrough AI-based platform designed to achieve low-emission and energy-efficient ammonia. The solution, developed in partnership with U.K.-based Applied Computing, combines pioneering foundational AI with KBR’s global leadership in both traditional and sustainable energy solutions, including high-end design and engineering and critical infrastructure.
The INSITE platform can seamlessly process ammonia facility’s operating data in real time and deliver explainable, physics-grounded insights that operators can trust and act on with certainty. The physics-based AI integration enables customers to extract the maximum value from their plant data to optimize day-to-day operations, reduce operational costs, and improve safety.
By combining next-generation AI with deep process and ammonia expertise, KBR is poised to set the benchmark for AI-driven energy production.
Conclusion
While there isn’t one magic bullet to solve the problem of sustainable global energy demand while also lowering emissions, ammonia is close.
Through continued innovation and development of world-changing solutions, KBR can help producers make the most of a good thing, using ammonia to sustainably meet energy demand, lower emissions, and create long-term value.
