FIREFLY™

A High-Energy Laser Weapon System – Palletized and Mobile Counter UAS

Robust // Modular // Open Architecture System // Scalable Power

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) present asymmetric threats to forward positions and key infrastructure. KORD’s FIREFLYTM is a palletized, mobile counter UAS high-energy laser weapon that can defeat multiple UAS at range.

The FIREFLYTM system is a robust, modular, open architecture system with scalable power from 5kW to 40kW options. Area protection is provided by advanced AI detection and tracking algorithms which enable operators to successfully detect, track, intercept and defeat incoming UAS threats at standoff ranges.

The FIREFLYTM system can interface with multiple C3S systems including FAAD, MEDUSA and others as well as stand-alone cueing sources such as RADARs and optical detection systems.

Our Approach

  • Architecture optimized to affordably balance performance, reliability, maintainability, and transportability
  • Modular Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) adapt to a wide variety of applications
  • Durability and performance validated through months of continuous operation and rugged environments
  • Economically deployable with limited support and sparing driven by simplified intermediate and field-level maintenance
  • Affordable by leveraging non-developmental components readily available from commercial sources to drive down cost, reduce lead time and increase system reliability
  • Factory inventory of fieldable units for price and schedule certainty
  • Offered for purchase via commercial terms, unique in the industry

Common Open Architecture

FireflyTM architecture is optimized to affordably balance performance, reliability, maintainability and transportability.

Support Systems: Support systems with LRUs are packaged in a modular design with open interfaces to support field level and intermediate level maintenance with flexibility to easily configure, tailor and upgrade for a wide variety of applications.

High-Energy Laser: The HEL is a scalable optical design supporting 5 kW to 40 kW; reduced susceptibility to laser damage and thermal effects; extended magazine depth; and long continuous laser-on-time.

ISR Payload: An ISR Payload with modular, independent visible and infrared camera systems to enhance target tracking at extended range. Each camera employs state-of-the-art trackers with AI/ML-enhanced capabilities for target classification and detection.

Capabilities Overview

Capabilities Overview

KORD's HEL solution: A next-generation, self-contained, palletized high-energy laser system that maximizes performance, reliability, maintainability and transportability. KORD’s FIREFLYTM high-energy laser weapon system is a self-contained directed energy solution offering the latest in directed energy protection, no matter where defense is needed.

The FIREFLYTM is based on KORD’s scalable high-energy laser architecture and is available in 10kW or 20kW options. The fully self-contained laser system includes power supply, thermal management, high-capacity batteries, and integrated radar and electronic warfare subsystems with significantly reduced size, weight, power, and cost affordability.

Why KORD

KORD possesses a unique, industry-leading collection of directed energy subject matter experts with extensive backgrounds in electro-optics, software engineering, artificial intelligence/machine learning, predictive avoidance, battle management software, fire control, target acquisition and tracking, advanced training solutions, systems engineering and integration. KORD’s directed energy team has been built and honed during the past seven years, leading the U.S. Army’s effort to develop its first fieldable HEL weapon system. The effort will ultimately result in the fielding of the DE M-SHORAD system designed to defeat UAS; rotary and fixed-wing aircraft; and RAM. In addition to developing and integrating directed energy systems, KORD’s extensive training experience is unparalleled.
